The Michigan University team has today been awarded first place in the Abu Dhabi Solar Challenge, while second place went to the United Arab Emirate’s (UAE), Petroleum Institute. It is the first time the UAE has been represented in a solar car challenge. Belgium’s Punch Powertrain team took third place. The Abu Dhabi Solar Challenge (ADSC), the first International Solarcar Federation (ISF) sanctioned event in the Middle East was launched at Yas Marina Circuit today.
Sponsored by Abu Dhabi National Oil Company (ADNOC) and hosted by Abu Dhabi’s renewable energy company, Masdar, the event is part of Abu Dhabi Sustainability Week (ADSW). The event will take place January 15-19 and will finish at the opening ceremony of the World Future Energy Summit.

United Arab Emirates (UAE) rally and endurance driver Khaled Al Qubaisi was at Abu Dhabi’s Corniche to unveil the countdown clock for the Abu Dhabi Solar Challenge. He was also there to extend his support for the Petroleum Institute (PI), whose team is representing the country during the multi-stage, timed solar-car competition. The Petroleum Institute (PI) solar car team has successfully tested its solar car on the roads of Masdar City, ahead of its official unveiling in November.
PI is flying the flag for the United Arab Emirates (UAE), as one of 20 university teams from around the world competing in the Abu Dhabi Solar Challenge (ADSC). The competition, which is the Middle East’s first International Solarcar Federation event, will be held across the Emirate of Abu Dhabi from 16-19 January 2015.
